STATEMENT

When creating imagery I strive to capture a moment that allows a viewer’s imagination to establish a story, one that continues and never concludes; buts raises many questions. It is a dialogue of boundless imagination between artist, subject, and viewer of which I hope to achieve.  I want to impart a dynamic image rather than a singular moment in a photograph. To create a unique experience, challenge perception, and emotion. 


My creativity is fueled by passion and diversity. But, when I find a moment or my own inspiration to create one I become singularly focused, almost mesmerized, by 

the outlet of expression in which I delve. My ability to concentrate on conveying the moment I want to see through a photograph is inspired by an unknown or intangible entity. But, I find my inspiration in different creative forms that may all be applied to the same creative expression; such as songwriting, or creating a filmic experience on paper and, and then completing the cinematic project on film with all the elements intact.


When I first picked up a movie camera  on assignment and discovered the language of capturing images that moved, I realized that my exploration and execution of still photography was coming from the same place. I realized that I worked in exactly the same way I would when I began shooting stills. All that changes is the film moves, has sound. I realized that I shot all my editorial stories with the same concept of “narrative” storytelling; master shots, medium, closeups. The camera’s positions, its movement, while inspiring, guiding or just allowing the the organic actions, and internal life of the subjects; whether actors, models, musicians, or people not used to people filmed, creates a dance of emotions


The body of my work reflects artistic influences in the realms of music, drama, and dance. I am always invigorated by culture learned and experienced through travel and observing. There is always a story to be told and there is always an underlying truth; that in today’s society often seems to be suppressed in order to serve our limited perceptions. In that vein I find the element of film as an art and commercial medium to be of the utmost importance today. It is my goal to always find that basic truth in my work and expression and in order to do so I must remain true to myself and on a constant journey of travel; both physically and spiritually. 


My photography takes on two forms: “narratives” and “snaps”. narratives are infused with  a story or back story. Snaps are an abstract view of something immediately recognizable, but seeing it from the perspective of the lens, it holds an abstract attraction that forces the mind to come back at again before realizing it’s identity.


Growing up in a classic Russian and ballet enriched environment, I learned about the power of emotion along with the insistent beauty of line, and the deeply felt commitment that one can always be better with just a little more practice  and that the existence of artful stories that reflect on our lives, not only entertains, but teaches us something intimate about ourselves,  ultimately inviting memories of our past and renewed hopes for our future; ambitious but never impossible.
